Steve Bandoma
Steve Bandoma, born in 1981 in Kinshasa, also lives and works in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. He graduated from The Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa in 2004. He became a part of the artist collective group “Lisbrisme Synergy”. In 2005, he moved to South Africa, started his artistic career and took classes with Kevin McCauley. In 2011, he returned back to Kinshasa and founded Quoi De Neuf which is a platform for promoting art in Democratic Republic of Congo.
He uses a mix of techniques to express himself in his artwork including splashes of color, sculpture, paintings, collages and drawings. With his different techniques, he composes an incredible aesthetic explosion rather implosion, chaos or humor or suffering, often on the background of clash of civilizations. Faces, limbs, body fragments, animated figurines, fetishes are blended together to give life to the paintings which seem to be deconstructed and disjointed.
The artist considers himself ‘contemporary’ and ‘universal’ as the themes explored by him clearly depict his African identity, socialization, the culture clash and conflict between tradition and modernity. He conveys his message on these topics in his work with humor and in an ironic way.
Several artworks of Steve Bandoma were exhibited in Beaute Congo – Congo Kitoko Exhibition at Foundation Cartier Center (Paris), the 1 – 54 Contemporary African Art fairs (London & New York), AKAA Paris Fair. His work as also presented in Texaf Bilembo Cultural Center in Kinshasa and he had several solo shows in Europe, USA, DRC, South Africa and UK. His work was also featured in Evora Africa (Portugal) and was included in Kinshasa Megapolis (Leipzig) and the Lubumbashi Biennale (Kinshasa).
